REFSQ 2021
Mon 12 - Thu 15 April 2021 Germany

REFSQ 2021 is evolving the LiveStudies track into a broader context focusing on broadening open science in RE research. This new track, OpenRE, oriented to foster shared resources in RE. The theme for this year is RE Education and Training. The major aim is to foster sharing and collaboration regarding education and training materials among the many educators in the field who are geographically distributed across the world. The track features two kinds of submissions.

  • Tutorials: tutorial proposals about novel styles of teaching RE and RE practices. We solicit 5-page descriptions of the tutorial goals, content and intended audience. The tutorial can also be a lecture on a specific RE technique that is delivered to the audience. Find the call for “educational tutorials” here

  • Shared educational resources. The goal of this activity is to create a hub of community educational collaboration and curation of educational resources relevant to Requirements Engineering. Educational resources can be lectures, MOOCs, tools, educational datasets, tutorials, sources of RE data, assignment descriptions, etc. We solicit 5-page descriptions of educational resources. Find the call for “educational resources” here.

Accepted submissions of both types will be included in the CEUR proceedings; authors will be invited to present their work and participate in a dedicated panel.

Submission

Submit your paper (maximum 4 pages, plus 1 additional page of references) to EasyChair before 8 February 2021. Submitted papers will undergo single-blind peer review. We opt for single-blind peer review since description of the context is likely to disclose the authors’ identity. To make educational resources accessible and citable, we further encourage authors to attend to the FAIR rules, i.e. data should be: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. The submission must conform to the CEUR Formatting Guidelines and new CEUR Latex style. Upon notification of acceptance, all authors of accepted papers will be asked to complete a Copyright form and will receive further instructions for preparing their camera ready versions. At least one author of each paper is expected to present the results at the REFSQ conference. All accepted contributions will be published in the CEUR electronic proceedings.

Call for educational resources

Educational resources submissions should describe educational resources made available to use by other researchers or practitioners. Educational resources can be RE lessons (including RE modules within RE courses), MOOCs, tools, datasets, tutorials, sources of RE data, assignment descriptions, etc. Ideally, these resources should be of value to others in the community. Submissions are expected to include:

  • A description of the resource,
  • If the artefact is a dataset, please describe the methodology used to gather it and its provenance
  • A description of the context in which this resource has been used: for what target audience has the resource been designed? has it been used as part of a larger course or summer school?
  • Reflection on the past use of the educational resource: e.g., if the resource is an assignment, how did the students score on it? what kind of feedback did they provide?
  • Ideas for the future use and improvement: e.g., would the same assignment be suited for other target audiences, e.g., undergrad students instead of graduate students, or non-CS-majors?
  • The type of license for the resource (check, e.g., creative commons licenses: https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/)

The educational resources should be

  • Original, i.e., not been published elsewhere, under review or submitted for review elsewhere during the duration of consideration. Artifacts or tutorials that were merely part of a separate paper do not fall under this constraint (e.g., a set of case studies used in a REFSQ research submission).
  • Made available at the time of submission of the paper for review, and published and public upon acceptance. At latest upon publication of the paper the authors should archive data on preserved archives that can provide a digital object identifier (DOI) such as [zenodo.org], or [figshare.com]. In this way the data will become citable; DOI-based citation of the dataset should be included in the camera-ready version.
  • After acceptance, the authors acknowledge that they will upload their educational resources in https://github.com/reet-workshop/activities, which is maintained by the REET workshop and is the reference repository for any educational material in RE.

Similar Efforts

We note with gratitude the pioneering efforts of the REET workshop, at the RE conference, and the ability to share more substantial work with the community at the general research track at REFSQ. We intend for the focus of this track to be on shared resources, much like REET’s efforts, and hope to combine these resources into a single repository, after discussions with REET.

Call for educational tutorials

An educational tutorial can be:

  • A tutorial regarding a novel RE teaching practice, e.g., an unconventional pedagogical approach.
  • A tutorial on a specific RE technique that may be embedded in an RE course or training, e.g., how to teach EARS in a company or a class.

A tutorial proposal should describe:

  • Goal of the tutorial
  • Length (45 min to 1 hour)
  • Intended audience
  • Topics covered
  • Expected learning outcomes
  • Approach to engage the audience
  • Previous applications of the practice/technique and evidence about effectiveness
