Eric Raymond’s “The Cathedral and the Bazaar” is more than 20 years old. Has the bazaar evolved to be a more tolerant place? The original “bazaar” was the linux kernel and we see that the “benevolent dictator” has taken time off to become more “emotionally empathetic.” Linus Torvalds is usually right and his harshness is founded in his disdain for incompetence. However, as Jeff Bezos points out, “it’s harder to be kind than clever.” Through an examination of email exchanges among developers, we will discuss appropriate and inappropriate responses to perceived developer incompetence and disagreement. We will observe how developers maintain or destroy the working environment of open source. We will also look at codes of conduct and their impact on open source projects.
